While the battle for TikTok's US activities is imminent, ByteDance, the app's Chinese parent company, is using the last days of power to distance itself from China.
ByteDance is considering establishing a global headquarters for TikTok, according to a comment on Digital Trends. While London was listed as a potential city, ByteDance only confirmed that locations outside the United States are being considered.
“ByteDance has set itself the goal of being a global company. Given the current situation, ByteDance has looked into the possibility of establishing TikTok's headquarters outside of the United States to better serve our global users, ”said a spokesman for Bytedance.
This is not the first time that the topic of setting up TikTok's global headquarters outside of the United States has become a possibility. The issue of TikTok's global headquarters was first addressed in 2019, just a few weeks after the U.S. Foreign Investment Committee launched a national security investigation against TikTok's parent company. After additional pressure from the Trump administration, it was confirmed that ByteDance will be forced to sell TikTok's US operations. While TikTok currently has no global headquarters, its headquarters are in Culver City, California.
Digital Trends has asked TikTok for a comment and we will update this story as soon as we hear anything.
The investigation and growing security concerns over TikTok's data collection plan came to a head in late July when President Donald Trump announced a plan to ban the social media app. While the President is now supporting ByteDance's sale of TikTok to an American company, the sale must take place in the next 45 days. Otherwise the app will be closed, so that TikTok will find a precarious way into the future.
