Video game graphics have come a long way since the beginning of the industry. According to a manager from Epic Games, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will help take graphics to an even higher level.
Epic Games chief technology officer Kim Liberi said in an interview with the UK's official PlayStation Magazine that next-generation consoles will work with the company's Unreal Engine 5 to incorporate "movie-quality assets" into games Video Games Chronicle.
"It was a lifelong dream of mine that real-time computer graphics, and especially games, can be as believable and realistic as a movie," said Liberi.
"Next-generation graphics and computing power will not only make games more immersive, but also enable completely new game concepts that can take advantage of fully dynamic environments and lighting, greatly improved physics, smarter AI, and richer multiplayer experiences," he added.
Nanite technology from Unreal Engine
Liberi mentioned Epic Games' collaboration with The Mandalorian, which Unreal Engine used for visual effects, as an example of video game and movie merging to be supported by Unreal Engine 5's Nanite technology.
"You can now create full-quality environments with movie assets, and the motor does all the heavy lifting, resulting in truly photorealistic results," said Liberi, as Nanite technology will scale the assets in real time without loss of quality.
Unreal Engine 5, along with its Nanite technology, was launched in May in a real-time PlayStation 5 demo titled Lumen in the Land of Nanite. However, the preview for Unreal Engine 5 will be released in early 2021. A full release is planned for late 2021, so the games it creates won't be released soon after the launch of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this Christmas.
