In Himachal Pradesh one of the longest tunnels in the world opens at a great height. It was built at an altitude of 3000 m and is a 8.8 km long tunnel. The tunnel is located on the Manali-Leh highway and is named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
After a decades-long struggle, the tunnel is now open to vehicle movement, which will soon be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late September this year.
One of the most important tunnels, especially for the Indian armed forces, in which the tunnel gives the Indian armed forces all-weather access to Lahaul and the tunnel becomes an important road for the supply of the military garrison there.
The tunnel will also help tourists explore the unexplored winter destination and shorten the supply route for 40 km. It will ease traffic between Manali and Leh by reducing travel time by around 5 hours.
Famous for its touristic places like Manali, Leh, Spiti. Himachal Pradesh is one of the most remote regions to explore in mid-winter as it snows heavily in the winter months. With the help of this tunnel, the districts will be connected to other parts of Himachal in the winter months and will increase the influx of tourists in the winter months.
