It’s not too common for a film that flopped both critically and commercially to get a second shot at success, but that’s exactly what happens to Zack Snyders Justice League.
The end result of a long-standing (and some would argue, aggressively toxic) fan campaign, Justice League’s Snyder Cut, will feature an expanded, re-edited version of Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2017 superhero team-up film, The More closely aligns with Snyder’s original vision for the project. Snyder left the film prematurely due to a family tragedy, and many fans have attributed the film’s poor performance to changes by the studio and director Joss Whedon.
Since Zack Snyders Justice League 2021 is set to debut on the HBO Max streaming service, you’ll find everything we know about the Snyder Cut here.
Where and when will the Snyder Cut be released?
On May 20, Snyder confirmed that the Justice League “Snyder Cut” is not only in the works, but will also make its debut on WarnerMedia’s recently launched streaming video service HBO Max.

No specific premiere date for the film has been announced.
What does the Snyder Cut cost?
The changes Snyder plans for his director’s cut in the Justice League are expected to be both extensive and expensive. WarnerMedia chairman Bob Greenblatt suggests that the release of this new version of the film would cost more than $ 30 million.
The Justice League was already one of the most expensive films ever made, with a production budget in excess of $ 300 million and a reported breakeven of $ 750 million (therefore it is a “flop” status, even though it is worldwide) Earned $ 657 million). As a result, there is little pressure on the Snyder Cut to prove that the studio’s high investment is worth it.
What it takes
To bring Snyder’s original vision for the Justice League to the screen, the entire original post-production crew is to be hired for the film.
Snyder and the Justice League post-production team will then edit and re-evaluate the film. Extensive visual effects and possibly new dialogues are used to better adapt it to the tone and narrative sheet that the filmmaker intended for him. Although Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck and other actors have vocally supported the Snyder Cut, it is not known whether they will record new dialogues or make new scenes for the newly edited film.
How will it be different?
According to Snyder, only a quarter of his original work on the Justice League ended up in the film. The Snyder Cut is said to restore its original work and add a lot more to the story.

Adding all of this material is expected to significantly extend the film’s original 120-minute runtime, and HBO Max plans to release Zack Snyders Justice League either as a single four-hour film or as a multi-part limited series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The finished product will likely be more similar to Snyder’s grim films Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, which preceded the Justice League, with the lighter moments that Joss Whedon incorporated into the cut-out project.
With that in mind, it’s also rumored that due to the filmmaker’s original vision for the Justice League, which resembles a two-part story that resembles Marvel Studios & # 39; Avengers: Infinity War and, the Snyder Cut may end up with a dark note – and possibly with a Cliffhanger Avengers: Endgame. Spoiler alert: While the team would have defeated Darkseid’s sidekick Steppenwolf, his death has reportedly caused Darkseid to get involved and raise stakes for the Justice League sequel.

Various other rumors and unconfirmed reports suggest that Snyder’s original Justice League plan included Green Lantern, the death of Lois Lane, or a host of other elements that never made it into the movie. It remains to be seen which (if any) of these action points will be brought to the Snyder Cut.
Will Darkseid appear?
As mentioned earlier, one of the biggest differences between the Justice League feature film and the Snyder cut will be that a character appears that is suggested in the films of the DC Extended Universe but never fully featured on the screen: Darkseid.

In May, Snyder confirmed that the DC Comics cosmic conqueror would indeed appear in his version of the Justice League. The notorious villain was originally supposed to be the main opponent in a second Justice League film, but this project was discontinued after the first film’s poor performance.
Although Snyder doesn’t exactly reveal what the character will look like in the Justice League, the picture he publishes offers a nightmarish vision of Darkseid’s plans, with the character appearing against the backdrop of massive war machines on the broken, melted surface of a planet.
How we got here
Originally intended as a two-part finale to the saga that Snyder started with the Superman franchise restart of Man of Steel in 2013, the studio’s plans for the Justice League were derailed when Zack and Deborah Snyder (his wife and production partner) released the film in May 2017 left because of her daughter’s death.
Joss Whedon, who wrote and directed The Avengers in 2012, was commissioned to complete the film. Extensive new releases were planned in July 2017, costing an additional $ 25 million and pushing the film’s production costs beyond the $ 300 million mark.
The Justice League hit cinemas in November 2017, and although some of the world’s most famous superheroes were seen in Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, the film encountered disappointing results and poor reviews from both professional critics and the general public at the box office Audience. The Justice League was the first film in the DC Extended Universe not to exceed $ 100 million on the opening weekend and became one of the lowest-income films in the DCEU, both domestically and globally.
Critically speaking, the film was almost as bad for the reviewers as it was for the audience and received only 40% positive reviews. It was one of the worst rated films in the DCEU (after Suicide Squad and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice).
Although Zack Snyders’ two previous DCEU films (Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman) both received negative reviews, fans of the Whedon and Warner Bros. Pictures franchises quickly blamed the Justice League’s mistakes. A campaign to release a director of the film started almost immediately. The supporters used the hashtag “#ReleaseTheSnyderCut”. The campaign gained momentum as supporters pursued aggressive fan activism to persuade the studio to release a re-edited version of the film.
As the # ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement gained momentum, it also met with considerable criticism that some of its supporters used aggressive threats and cyberbullying to drive the campaign forward. DC Entertainment’s president, Diane Nelson, was one of the campaigns targeted at coordinated harassment that drove her out of Twitter, while entertainment journalists who voiced a negative rating for the film – especially women – were also targeted.
In the years that followed, Snyder and the Justice League cast and creative team continued to fuel the campaign, dropping evidence that a director’s cut existed and encouraging supporters to request its release. Despite the questionable tactics of the # ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, supporters were rewarded in May 2020 when Snyder officially announced that his version of the film was actually going to be released.
WarnerMedia and HBO Max then confirmed Snyder’s announcement, saying that the Snyder Cut of Justice League would be added to the streaming service in 2021.
